Hazawa Coffee

Tsugumi: Hmm... A cooking class, huh...?
Tsugumi: I was told to spread the word, but what am I supposed to do at this point...?
Tsugumi: Mom is always telling me these things on such short notice. And she wants to have it this weekend... If she had told me earlier, I could have asked Ran-chan and the others for advice...
Tsugumi: Uhh, I'm pretty sure the purpose of this event was to raise awareness about Hazawa Coffee and to build closer relationships with customers.
Tsugumi: ... Yeah! Interacting with customers seems like fun! Ehehe, I'm getting kind of excited!
Tsugumi: Alright! First, I'll go hang the posters up downtown!
Tsugumi: There's a lot, but if I do my best, it'll be over in no time!
Tsugumi: Mom~! I'm going downtown~, okay~?

Two Days Before The Cooking Class

Tsugumi: I believe the deadline to register for the cooking class is tomorrow, right? I wonder how many people signed up at this point.
Tsugumi: Mom said she put all of the applications in the register, so...
Tsugumi: Ah, here they are...! ... Wait... Don't tell me... Are all of these applications?
Tsugumi: There are so many... I can't believe all these people registered!
Tsugumi: At this rate, we might even end up going over the capacity limit...!
Tsugumi: When the day comes, I'm gonna have to give it my all!!

Downtown

Sayo: Today's rehearsal went quite well.
Rinko: It did... There's not... much time left... until our next show...
Sayo: That's right. For our next practice, I want our efforts to be more focu- Hm?
Rinko: ... Hikawa-san? A-are you... okay?
Sayo: Yeah. Look at this on the store window...
Rinko: A cooking class... poster... right?
Rinko: They're going... to make cookies... That might... be kind of... interesting.
Sayo: Really? Why would you have interest in that?
Rinko: Snacks like cookies... are easier to grab... and eat when... you're in the middle... of playing games...
Sayo: I see... Sounds like the kind of reason you'd give.
Rinko: I-I'm... always looking forward... to eating the cookies... that Imai-san makes for us... during my gaming... sessions...
Sayo: (... Intriguing. To think Shirokane-san would seem so happy about something... That must mean she's really taken a liking to Imai-san's cookies.
Sayo: (Though, I have been thinking about how her treats have a calming effect on people.)
Sayo: (I'm certain her personality contributes to this as well, but her treats always put the band in a positive mood...)
Rinko: Hikawa... san...?
Sayo: ((... I wonder if I have what it takes to make something like that. If I could, I'm sure Roselia would benefit...)
Rinko: Uhm... Hikawa-san...? I-is something wrong...?
Sayo: Ah... No, nothing at all.
Sayo: More importantly, it's getting dark. Let's get home.
Rinko: O-okay...

Day Before The Cooking Class

Hazawa Coffee

Tsugumi: Uhmmmm~, so these ingredients go in this container, and this goes in here...
Tsugumi: Alright, everything is ready!
Tsugumi: ... Phew, the day is almost here. Supposedly, there were people who registered right before the deadline too. Seems like this idea was a lot more popular than I expected...
Tsugumi: I was all before when I said I would do it, but I don't know if I actually can... I'm feeling kind of unsure...
Tsugumi: ... Wait, no! I can't count myself out before I even try! You have to always give 100 percent, no matter what you're faced with!!
Tsugumi: Okay, I'll do my best!

Day Of The Cooking Class

Hazawa Coffee

Tsugumi: (T-the day has finally come...! Wow, there's a lot more people here than I expected...)
Tsugumi: (Even if I'm just giving my mom a hand, am I really expected to help a group this big...?)
Tsugumi: (I-it'll be okay! I stayed up late last night preparing for this. I should be able to answer any questions that come my way!)
Sayo: Oh... I know you. You're...
Tsugumi: Huh?! Sayo-san...?! From Roselia...?!
Sayo: ... Hazawa-san... right...? I see. So your family is the one that owns Hazawa Coffee.
Tsugumi: By any chance... Are you also here to take part in the cooking class?
Sayo: That's right. I'm here because cookies... or rather, treats have a relaxing effect on people.
Tsugumi: Huh? Y-yeah, tasty treats certainly make you feel calmer when you eat them...!
Sayo: Precisely. During rehearsal, whether or not we have them to provide that kind of effect has a significant impact on our productivity.
Sayo: There's a member in my band who always makes those sort of things for us, and...
Sayo: Once when she didn't come to practice, everyone felt uneasy, and we couldn't get things going.
Tsugumi: I-I see.
Sayo: If I had baked and brought my own snacks that day to rehearsal... I'm sure the mood would have been at least a little different.
Sayo: And that's why I decided to learn how to bake. If we're ever faced with similar circumstances, I'd like to be able to avoid a repeat of those events.
Tsugumi: Oh, okay. So that's why you came.
Sayo: Right.
Tsugumi: (Sayo-san sure is serious...)
Sayo: Hazawa-san? Is there something on my face?
Tsugumi: Ah, no! I was just thinking how amazing it is that you're so thoughtful about how to help your band.
Sayo: ... Amazing? I think it's only natural that I do what I can to help us improve...
Tsugumi: But still, it's impressive that you can actually put those thoughts into action!
Sayo: Y-you think so...? Well, I'm still new to baking, so whether or not I can actually do it well is a different story...
Sayo: Uhm, Hazawa-san. Today we're making iced cookies... What does that mean? They seem to be more complicated than regular cookies...
Tsugumi: They're not. It just means that we'll use sugar and egg whites to color and decorate regular cookies!
Tsugumi: So basically, we'll just bake some cookies, and then we'll dress them up a bit. Nothing too complicated really.
Sayo: I hope I'll be able to do that...
Tsugumi: No need to worry! It'll be fine!
Tsugumi: All you have to do is mix the flour, butter and sugar, knead it and make the cookie dough.
Tsugumi: My mom is about to explain in detail while she demonstrates, so watch her closely.
Tsugumi: If there's something you don't understand, feel free to ask about it!

10 Minutes Later

Tsugumi's Mother: Tsugumi, come here for a sec.
Tsugumi: Yes, mom?
Tsugumi's Mother: Is that girl you were talking to earlier your friend?
Tsugumi: You mean Sayo-san? Y-yeah... She's my friend.
Tsugumi's Mother: Then why don't you stick with her and give her a hand?
Tsugumi: Wait, me?!
Tsugumi's Mother: She's been doing a lot of looking around as if she doesn't know what to do, so you should help her. Got it?
Tsugumi: (Ah, she walked away... Me? Helping Sayo-san...? Ohh~, I can feel the butterflies now...)
Tsugumi: (I've heard about Sayo-san from Ako-chan. She's extremely serious and strict... What if I say the wrong thing during my explanation to someone like that...?)
Tsugumi: (B-but mom was right. Sayo-san's been looking around a lot, and it seems like she needs help...)
Tsugumi: (... Y-yeah, that's right! I'm the one who said I would help out, and my mom is counting on me, so I have to make sure I do this right!)
Tsugumi: (I-I'll give it my best shot...!)

Mix for How Long?

Baking cookies proves to be a struggle for Sayo.

Sayo: (... I don't understand.)
Tsugumi: (Everyone around me has already started, and I know I should get to it sooner than later, but... Am I following the procedure correctly...?)
Tsugumi: Uhm, Sayo-san? I-is something wrong?
Sayo: Hazawa-san... Well, first, I have no idea where I'm supposed to start...
Tsugumi: That's okay! Like I mentioned before, the first thing is to try making the cookie dough! If you can do that, then all that'll be left is cutting and baking them!
Tsugumi: Making cookies isn't too difficult. I'll also be right by your side, so if you don't understand something, you can ask me right away!
Sayo: Hazawa-san, thank you. Alright, I'll give it a try.
Sayo: (... First, I have to mix the butter in this bowl until it becomes white, right? I'm pretty sure that's what Hazawa-san's mom was saying before we started, but...)
Sayo: ... I don't get it.
Tsugumi: Sayo-san? You stopped mixing the butter. Is something wrong?
Sayo: Th-there is. Actually, there's something I'm unsure about...
Tsugumi: What's that?
Sayo: It's about mixing until it's white. Could you explain more concretely what color "white" is supposed to indicate?
Tsugumi: Uhm... White means...
Tsugumi: (What do I say? How am I supposed to explain the color to her? I could say pure white, but that's not quite right...!)
Tsugumi: (I'm the teacher! I have to pull myself together! If I'm not able to answer Sayo-san's question soon, that's only going to make things worse for her...)
Sayo: Uhm... What color is this? I would say it's a cream color right now...
Tsugumi: Ah, uhm... Y-yeah! So let's try mixing it a little bit more!
Sayo: U-understood. I'll do it a little longer.
Tsugumi: (Sigh... I couldn't explain myself... I really am useless after all...)
Sayo: ... Phew... I still can't call this white.
Tsugumi: (It's certainly more white than it was before, but... There's no one who would ever say this is white.)
Tsugumi: ... Ah, Sayo-san! That's a good color for the butter, so you can stop mixing now!
Sayo: ... This is... white? It seems kind of yellow to me...
Tsugumi: I-it's okay if it's not exact! If you mix until it's this color, it'll be just fine!
Sayo: ... I see. So this is "white" when it comes to butter, right? I'll have to remember that...
Tsugumi: (S-Sayo-san and I were able to get through one step. Thank goodness...)
Sayo: Next, I have to mix the dough, right?
Tsugumi: That's right! Let's give it a try!
Sayo: Understood. How long should I stir for?
Tsugumi: L-let's see... Try mixing until everything is blended together, please.
Sayo: Hazawa-san? Is there something on my face?
Tsugumi: Ah, no! I was just thinking how amazing it is that you're so thoughtful about how to help your band.
Sayo: Until everything is blended... right? Okay, I'll try.
Sayo: ... Phew.
Sayo: (... Blended together...? Surely, this could be called "blended together", right?)
Tsugumi: Ah, Sayo-san. That's about the right amount for mixing the dough.
Sayo: I see. So, everything being blended together means about this firm, right? I'll keep that in mind.
Tsugumi: Next we want to put all of the dough together and let it chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Sayo: 30 minutes, correct? Great. That's easy to understand. Okay, I'll go place it in the refrigerator.
Tsugumi: Uhm... Sayo-san. I'm sorry. I haven't been doing a very good job explaining how to do things...
Sayo: Your mom's teaching style was also very friendly and easy to understand. However...
Tsugumi: However...?
Sayo: Quantifying can be quite difficult. Things like "until it's white" or "until it's blended" can be hard for me to understand, this being my first time.
Tsugumi: Yeah, understanding how long or how much you have to do something can be hard for a beginner...
Tsugumi: Really, it would have been better if I could properly explain those points... Sigh, I'll have to do some thinking on that later.
Tsugumi: ... Ah, sorry! Can't have the teacher being down! Then you'll start to feel uneasy too, right? Ahaha...
Sayo: ...
Sayo: (Until now, I had only been paying attention to my awkwardness and inability to adapt, but... Instead of denying those things, she acknowledges them.)
Sayo: (Not to mention, she's putting her best effort into being a teacher and taking her job seriously.)
Tsugumi: ... Uhm, Sayo-san? Is something wrong?
Sayo: No, sorry. I just got lost in my own thoughts for a second...
Sayo: It seems like we have some time, so I was thinking I'd clean up this area.
Sayo: Uhh... First, this bowl- Kya!!
Tsugumi: Wah!! Sayo-san, what happened?!
Sayo: I-I'm sorry, I dropped the bowl...
Tsugumi: T-that's okay! I'll pick this up, so you can- Kya!!
Sayo: Hazawa-san! Are you alright?!
Tsugumi: S-sorry! I dropped the bowl that was over here... Aw man~, I knew I was useless~...
Sayo: ... Fufu. Why don't we pick it up together then?
Tsugumi: ... Y-yeah. Let's do that... If you don't mind... Ahahahaha.

Hazawa Coffee

Sayo: Hazawa-san, I took the dough that was chilling from the refrigerator. What should I do now?
Tsugumi: Now you're gonna want to roll out the dough with a rolling pin! The thickness should be about-
Sayo: Ah, your mom is about to explain... I see, so approximately 5 millimeters thick...
Sayo: 5 millimeters...? How thick would that be...?
Tsugumi: (... Did something happen? Sayo-san just stopped moving...)
Sayo: ... Ah, Hazawa-san, do you have a ruler?
Tsugumi: What?! A... ruler?
Sayo: I need a ruler to make the dough 5 millimeters thick, so I'd like to borrow one...
Tsugumi: (Sayo-san really is serious. I bet she's making a genuine effort to deal with a lot of different things.)
Tsugumi: Sayo-san. You're right that said 5 millimeters, but you'll be okay if you're just within that range!
Tsugumi: Making it a little thicker or a little thinner won't cause any problems!
Sayo: Really?
Tsugumi: Yep! Not to mention, dense cookies are a thing too.
Sayo: That's what you mean. Still...
Sayo: (Saying I can estimate "within range" doesn't help me understand...)
Tsugumi: Sayo-san, why don't we take a look t the thickness of the dough together?
Sayo: Hazawa-san... Yes, if you please.

Sayo: Phew... Hazawa-san, I gave rolling out the dough a try, but would this be about 5 millimeters?
Tsugumi: Let's see. I think that seems about right!
Tsugumi: Shall we measure with a ruler?
Sayo: Let's. I'm interested to see how it came out.
Tsugumi: Okay! I'll go grab one! Be back in a second!
Tsugumi: Thanks for waiting! Alright, let's measure!
Tsugumi: Hm~... Huh?! I-it's 10 millimeters!
Tsugumi: That's not exactly "within range"...
Sayo: ... This "within range" thing is very difficult.
Tsugumi: Sigh... I'm sorry, Sayo-san. I really have to get it together...
Sayo: I wouldn't say that... Anyway, I'll flatten the dough a little more.
Tsugumi: Yes, please... When making treats, there are times where you need to be sure to stick to the process and times where you can get away with just eyeballing things.
Tsugumi: Flattening the dough is... one of those times when you can just eyeball it, so I thought it should turn out fine even if you weren't being exact...
Sayo: What would be an example of a time when you need to stick to the process?
Tsugumi: Uhm~... Like when you're measuring the ingredients.
Tsugumi: If you don't have just the right amount of each ingredient, you could end up with burnt treats, or the dough might not mix together well.
Tsugumi: ... Ah, I'm sorry! I shouldn't be acting like a know-it-all...
Sayo: It's no problem. Right now you're my teacher, so don't let that bother you.
Sayo: Besides, I learned something about the parts of the process that require extreme care and parts where I can be a little more lax.
Sayo: Hazawa-san. How's the thickness of this dough?
Tsugumi: ... Mhm! That looks really close! Let's measure it!
Tsugumi: Uhm... W-wow! It's just about 5 millimeters!
Tsugumi: Wah~, congratulations, Sayo-san! Look, no matter which way I measure it... it's 5 millimeters!
Sayo: ... Is that really something to be so happy about? But thanks... I guess... Fufufu.
Sayo: (Her being happy for me... for just flattening some dough makes me feel happy as well.)
Tsugumi: Let's try to keep this up during the next step.
Sayo: Okay, I'll do my best. What are we supposed to do next?
Tsugumi: Now you'll use cookie cutters to make shapes out of the dough. Choose which shapes you want from these!
Sayo: There are quite a number of different ones here. Which should I go with...?
Sayo: (From these... I pick this... this... and this one, I guess...)
Sayo: ... I've decided. I'd like to make my cookies with these.

Common Characteristics

that she has in common with Tsugumi.

Sayo: ...
Tsugumi: (Sayo-san's taking her cookie cutting so seriously. She's being really careful not to make even the slightest mistake... Maybe she's making them for someone special.)
Sayo: ... Phew. Done. Hazawa-san, what should I do with the dough, now that I've cut it?
Tsugumi: Line the pieces up on this cookie sheet. Once you've done that, you can put them in the oven to bake!
Sayo: Understood. Alright, I'll place them on the sheet and then in the oven.
Sayo: I'm back. I put them in the oven and set the timer. Was 170 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes okay?
Tsugumi: Yes, that works! Okay, it's time to wash the dishes while we wait for them to bake!
Sayo: Understood.
Tsugumi: I'll help too!
Sayo: Okay, yeah. If you don't mind.
Tsugumi: Sayo-san, no need to rush, okay? We have 20 minutes, so let's take our time washing these!
Sayo: Okay... Uhm, Hazawa-san. Thank you.
Tsugumi: Huh?! W-why are you thanking me?
Sayo: Thanks to your teaching, I was somehow able to do all of this. I definitely wouldn't have been able to on my own.
Sayo: That's why I wanted to say thank you.
Tsugumi: T-that's not true! I didn't do anything... It's all because of the effort you put in!
Sayo: No, that's not it at all. By taking this cooking class, I was able to learn something very important from you.
Tsugumi: You... were...?
Sayo: Yes. I suppose you could say it's a habit of mine, but I tend to be unable to show restraint, and no matter what I'm doing, I end up putting on airs.
Sayo: However, while we were making cookies, you taught me all about moderation.
Sayo: You were earnest and did your best in order to help me understand that I don't always have to be so precise with everything...
Sayo: Your enthusiasm and willingness to help me learn. I think that those characteristics are quite wonderful.
Tsugumi: Hearing you say all of those things is kind of embarrassing. Th-thank you.
Tsugumi: Uh-uhm... This might be kind of rude to say, but... I think that from making cookies together today, I felt a strong sense of closeness with you.
Sayo: ... Huh?
Tsugumi: You mentioned that you have trouble showing restraint. I'm really bad at that too. Everyone always teases me about it...
Tsugumi: Ahaha, you probably don't want to be compared to me, right? I'm sorry...
Sayo: No, it's fine. In fact, I actually felt a certain level of affinity as well.
Tsugumi: R-really? Whew, thank goodness~. So then... you were thinking the same thing I was thinking, right?
Tsugumi: That makes me... really happy... I guess...? Or embarrassed... maybe...?
Sayo: Hey, Hazawa-san. We still have some time until the cookies are done. Why don't we talk a little bit more?
Sayo: I want you to tell me more about yourself.
Tsugumi: Yeah, I'd love to! I want to know more about you too!
Tsugumi: Everyone in Afterglow is amazing!
Tsugumi: Ran-chan writes all of the lyrics for us, and Moca-chan can copy a melody just by hearing it...
Tsugumi: Tomoe-chan is always watching over us and supporting us in many different ways, while Himari-chan is the source of our energy...
Tsugumi: I'm proud to call them my friends!
Tsugumi: But that's exactly why I need to hurry and catch up to them... I always get all worked up because I don't want to watch them get any further away from me than they already are...
Sayo: (Hazawa-san... Just as I thought. We're very similar. Comparing herself to the other band members, getting flustered and feeling pressured... Just like how I feel with Hina...)
Tsugumi: Ahaha, sorry. That last part got really serious...
Sayo: No, it's okay. I can't really describe it that well, but I go through the same thing.
Tsugumi: The same thing... as I do...?
Sayo: That's right. You might have seen her around CiRCLE, I have a younger sister named Hina.
Sayo: Unlike me, Hina can do anything. You might say she was born a genius. As far as I know, there hasn't been anything she's been unable to do.
Sayo: I always end up comparing myself to her. I wonder why Hina can do thing that I can't... So I understand how you feel when you say you want to catch up to the others.
Tsugumi: Sayo-san...
Sayo: I think your passion and ability to dedicate yourself to something is admirable.
Sayo: If you're not making any progress... If you're comparing yourself to others and you're feeling inferior... You might be thinking too hard.
Sayo: ... Actually, it'd be nice if I could convince myself of that too.
Tsugumi: I-I think the fact that you deal with everything so genuinely is really admirable as well!
Tsugumi: Not to mention, you're really good at guitar. I play a different instrument, but I respect you for that!
Sayo: Hazawa-san... Thank you.
Sayo: In that case, I have to find my own sound soon so I can live up to your expectations.
Tsugumi: You own sound...?
Sayo: That's right. I'm currently in the process of looking for it. I'm not sure when I'll finally get there, but I guarantee that I'll find it.
Tsugumi: (Find one's own sound... The sound of Sayo-san's guitar... Wow, I've never even thought of anything like that before.)
Tsugumi: Uh-uhm, do you think there's something like that for me too?
Sayo: Yes, there should be. Think about it. There's something good about you that only exists within you. One day, you'll be able to find your own sound without comparing yourself to others.
Sayo: And, without question, so will I...
Sayo: ...
Sayo: If I'm able to put into practice the restraint I learned from you, I may be able to find my own sound...
Tsugumi: I-I'll do my best to find my own sound too!

Sayo: Hazawa-san, it's been about 20 minutes. I'm going to go check the oven.
Tsugumi: Okay, I'll be here!
Sayo: I'm back.
Tsugumi: Still here! Wow~, those look really yummy!
Sayo: Yeah, they do. Now that I'm looking at them, I do feel a bit of emotion.
Sayo: ... These cookies... I made them.
Tsugumi: Fufu, it's not over yet, Sayo-san. Now for the finishing touch. Time to put the icing on!
Sayo: Icing... I do remember you saying there was a decoration part, but... It still seems complicated.
{
Tsugumi: No, it'll be okay! You just have to take the mixture of icing and food coloring, and use it to draw pictures on your cookies.
Sayo: ... U-understood. I'll give it a try.

Tsugumi: Sayo-san, how's it coming along?
Sayo: I'm currently trying to draw the details of the guitar, but... it's quite difficult.
Tsugumi: Yeah, when you try to make one part perfect, you end up wanting to make the whole thing perfect, huh?
Tsugumi: ... Hm? What are these cookies here...?
Sayo: Those are dog and cat-shaped cookies. Getting the balance right with the eyes and the noses was tough, so they came out a bit warped...
Tsugumi: T-that's not true! They're cute! Especially the dog-shaped cookies. I can feel the love from the detail you put in. Can I assume that you like dogs?
Sayo: Y-yes... I do like dogs...
Sayo: ... And... so does Hina.
Tsugumi: I see. So if you gave these to her as a present, she's sure to be happy!
Sayo: Yeah, I hope so.
Tsugumi: Who do you plan to give these cat-shaped ones?
Sayo: They're for Minato-san.
Sayo: She said once that looking at cats gave her inspiration for a song, so I figured that cat-shaped cookies might have the same type of effect.
Tsugumi: I see! And the guitar-shaped ones are because you're part of a band, right?
Sayo: Right, exactly. And I remembered Imai-san and the others having a strap like that.
Tsugumi: (At first, Sayo-san said she wanted to make treats for the calming effect, but I wonder if she really just wanted to do something to make her band members and Hina-senpai happy.)
Tsugumi: (She's so kind...)
Sayo: Hazawa-san? Did I get something on my face?
Tsugumi: N-no, nothing!
Tsugumi: More importantly, I think it's lovely that you were thinking about all of them when you chose the shapes you wanted to use!
Tsugumi: I'm sure your intention won't be lost on them, and they'll be really hap- I mean, t-they'll be able to relax!
Sayo: Thank you. Hearing you say that makes me feel more sure.
Sayo: (Strange... Maybe it's thanks to Hazawa-san not contradicting me...)
Sayo: (She respects the parts of me that I believe are flawed as well and keeps the conversation going... That's very comforting.)

Sayo: ... Done. Hazawa-san, I finished the icing.
Tsugumi: Wah~! Congratulations! Alright, this is the last step. Let's wrap the cookies!
Tsugumi: Use what we have here for the bag and the ribbon!
Sayo: Okay... Oh, this ribbon... It has a lovely color.
Tsugumi: Ah! I found that ribbon at the shopping mall! I'm glad you like it!
Tsugumi: There were some other bags and ribbons with nice colors, but after some discussion and seeing what was in my wallet, I couldn't buy them at the time...
Tsugumi: Ah, I know! If you don't mind, would you like to go to the knick-knack shop together? I was thinking I would go back and get the ribbons and bags I couldn't buy before.
Sayo: To the knick-knack shop...?
Tsugumi: Ah, but only if you have time, of course... I-is that okay?
Sayo: Yeah, I'd love to go with you. I look forward to it.

Tsugumi: Sayo-san, great job today! And with that, the cooking class is over!
Tsugumi: Thanks for sticking with me until the end, despite my awful explanations...!
Sayo: I'd like to thank you as well. Your explanations weren't awful at all. I had a really good experience thanks to you.
Tsugumi: R-really? I sure hope so...
Sayo: Hazawa-san, I know I'm one to talk, but I think you should carry yourself with more confidence.
Sayo: You have so many positive characteristics. I think you're especially good at finding other people's strong points.
Tsugumi: You... think so? I've never thought of myself that way, so I don't really get that feeling...
Sayo: I do. Today I feel like I got to know all about that part of you.
Sayo: I'm sure there are many different types of people in Afterglow, but...
Sayo: I think the ability to find the good points in others is a fitting trait for you.
