Yukina: A piano competition...?
Rinko: Yes. There's one coming up... that I'm... thinking about participating in...
Lisa: I remember you saing you wanted to, come to think of it.
Sayo: She did, yes, but didn't that conversation take place quite some time ago?
Ako: You've been looking forward to this for a while now, haven't you, Rin-rin?
Rinko: Yes. I've taken part before..
Rinko: So I decided... that if I... was going to enter a competition... it would be this one...
Yukina: Do you have some sort of emotional attachment to it?
Rinko: I wouldn't... put it that way... No...
Yukina: ...?
Ako: Are you sure about this thought? Didn't you also say you don't like competing in these because there are a lot of people?
Rinko: Yes... The judging is open to the public... so there will be a lot of spectators... on top of the large number of participants...
Lisa: Th-that'd be enough to make anyone nervous. I'd probably choke if I had to perform in front of so many people...
Ako: You gonna be okay, Rin-rin?
Rinko: Probably not... but I want to give it a shot...
Rinko: I feel like I can finally face... what I've been running from... for so long...
Sayo: ... Of course you can. I hope all goes well for you.
Rinko: Hikawa-san... Thank you very much...
Yukina: If you're serious, then it may be best to begin preparations right away.
Rinko: Yes, I plan to set aside time... to rehearse my sheet music in private...
Rinko: Oh... But I won't let it... interfere with my responsibilities... for the band...
Lisa: Hahaha, it's not like you need our permission or anything.
Yukina: Yes, Lisa is correct. We're not ones to put a damper on the efforts of others.
Rinko: Yukina-san... Imai-san...
Ako: Hey, Rin-rin. What kind of song is that sheet music you mentioned?
Rinko: The entry details were announced today... so it's probably... somewhere on the website... by now...
Rinko: I haven't had a look at it yet, either... so I'm not... entirely sure...
Lisa: Hm, might as well do a quick search, then. Let's see, I think this is the right site. What song do you have to play...?
Ako: Ah, found it! I bet this is it!
Rinko: ...!
Yukina: Is this... a classical music piece?
Sayo: Most likely, though I am not too familiar with the genre...
Rinko: ...
Yukina: Rinko?
Ako: Rin-rin? What's wrong?
Rinko: N-nothing... it's a composition I'm familiar with... That's all...
Rinko: The very same piece... that I played at that competition... long ago...
Lisa: Huh? You mean the time back when you were in elementary school, right?
Yukina: Even at such a young age, you were already playing music aimed at high school students?
Rinko: W-well... my piano instructor told me... that I should be able... to play a song... of this level...
Ako: Whoa~! So you were mega good at the piano, even as a kid~!
Rinko: N-no, I wouldn't say that...
Lisa: Hahaha, I sure would.
Sayo: I believe you've been the recipient of awards at these competitions in the past, yes?
Rinko: Uhm... I guess so...
Ako: You hit the jackpot, Rin-rin! A song you've played before should be a piece of cake!
Lisa: You can do it, Rinko! I'll be cheering you on!
Rinko: I-I'll try... Thank you very much...

Yukina: ... This seems like a good place to stop for today.
Ako: I'm wiped out from all that practicing~. Nice job though, Rin-rin~.
Rinko: Y-you too, Ako-chan...
Lisa: Wait, isn't Rinko sticking around to rehearse for the competition?
Ako: Huh? Really?
Rinko: Yes... I thought I'd get in a bit of practice...
Ako: Oh, okay. But don't overdo it, okay?
Sayo: Yes, you do seem a tad worn out. Trying to cram too much into such a short time is unhealthy.
Rinko: Huh...? Were there problems... with how I performed earlier...?
Sayo: No, you didn't make any mistakes. However, there was a somewhat somber tone to your playing.
Sayo: Imai-san, Udagawa-san. Did you feel it as well?
Ako: Well, it did seem kinda different than her usual sound...
Lisa: Y-yeah. There was a lack of energy or something...
Rinko: ...
Yukina: Indeed, it was not your typical performance.
Lisa: Y-Yukina... Look, it was a new song, right? So she just needs more time to get the hang of it...
Lisa: There's a ton of places where I'm still dropping the ball, too~.
Rinko: New or otherwise, Rinko normally has no trouble grasping the mood of any song.
Rinko: I-I believe it's because I don't have a complete understanding of it yet...
Yukina: ...
Yukina: If you know the reason, then my input is unnecessary. Try to have it figured out by next time.
Rinko: O-okay...
Ako: Rin-rin...

After Practice

Rinko: (It was supposed to be a group rehearsal... but I ended up being a burden...)
Rinko: (N-no, what I need to focus on right now is the competition...)
Rinko: ...! One more time...
Rinko: This is no good... I need to focus more...
Rinko: "Perfect form, perfect shot"... That's what Hikawa-san taught me... Right now... I should be focusing... on my piano... nothing more...

A Few Hours Later

CiRCLE - Lobby

Rinko: Sigh...
Rinko: (Another day of not getting through the piece...)
Rinko: (At this rate, my actual performance will go just as poorly...)
Yukina: ... Rinko?
Rinko: Yukina-san...?
Yukina: I knew that you would be staying after rehearsals to practice on your own, but until this hour?
Rinko: Y-yes... Did you also stay behind, Yukina-san...?
Yukina: Of course. I need to continue practicing our new song. My singing is still far from perfect.
Rinko: So that's why... you're here so late...
Yukina: ... You're looking rather long in the face. I'd say, is your training not going very well?
Rinko: Yes... No matter how much I practice... I cannot play th piece properly...
Yukina: Is it truly that difficult of a composition? I suppose I do recall your surprise upon hearing that it was the selected piece.
Rinko: ...
Rinko: It is difficult... but I shouldn't be having this much trouble... When I play it, however... memores from my childhood come flooding back...
Rinko: My fingers seize up... and refuse to move...
Yukina: Rinko...

Stopped Sound

Rinko is struggling to practice the song for her competition.
Yukina asks Rinko what made her first start playing the piano.

Transcript

Rinko: My reason for picking up piano... stems from a certain concert...
Rinko: My mother brought me... and the pianist I saw that day... gave the most beautiful performance...
Rinko: I knew... that I wanted to play the piano in the exact same way... so I began taking lessons...

Young Rinko: ...!
Piano Teacher: Amazing, Rinko-chan! You can already play that difficult of a piece?
Young Rinko: Yes... I practiced very hard...
Piano Teacher: Fufu, you really do love the piano, don't you? Seeing you play with such enthusiasm makes it fun for me too.
Young Rinko: Ehehe...
Piano Teacher: If you can handle something like this, then I think you're ready to enter much bigger competitions. Would you like to give it a try?
Young Rinko: B-but competitions... are...
Piano Teacher: Don't worry. You've already won awards at smaller events, so you'll be fine with stepping up onto a larger stage.
Young Rinko: O-okay...

Yukina: That's a tad surprising. I assumed you would've been more hesitant about participating.
Rinko: It's not as though I was on board with it... Thinking of all those people watching me... had me terrified, even back then...
Rinko: But thinking of how proud everyone would be... I entered... My mother and father... even my piano teacher...
Rinko: Nothing could have made me happier... and so, in spite of my fears... I agreed to participate...
Yukina: I follow you so far...
Rinko: But I was young... and I had no idea what it really meant... to be under such a big spotlight...
Rinko: My mother brought me... to a huge venue, as big as a concert hall... and that's where I was to play...

Young Rinko: (This place... is a lot bigger than the other ones...)
Young Rinko: There are so many people... and they're all staring at me...)
Staff: ...Shirokane-san? Rinko Shirokane-san?
Young Rinko: Huh...?
Staff: The judging has commenced. Please begin playing.
Young Rinko: Y-yes...! Right away...!
Young Rinko: (I have to... try my best... Mom and dad... and my teacher... are all cheering me on...)
Young Rinko: I practiced really hard... so everything will be okay...)
Young Rinko: (Don't think about the crowd... Don't think about the crowd...)
Young Rinko: ...?!
Young Rinko: (I messed up...! But I always get that part right...!)
Young Rinko: (Ah! I can't give up now...! I have to keep playing...!)
Young Rinko: (What comes next...? Uhh... Oh no... I can't remember...)

Yukina: ... I see. So that's what happened.
Rinko: It was horrifying... which is why I refused... to participate in any more competitions...
Rinko: After joining Roselia, though... I feel like I've been changing... bit by bit.
Rinko: Now, I should be able to... participate in competitions... or so I thought...
Rinko: Looks like I... got a little ahead of myself...
Yukina: Rinko...
Rinko: The competition that I plan on entering... is actually the very same one... that I failed as a child...
Rinko: If I can... stand on the same stage... and play until the very end...
Rinko: I will feel as though... I actually accomplished something...
Rinko: But being confronted with the same competition... brings back all of those old memories...
Rinko: All those people... all those disappointed faces... I remember them clearly...
Rinko: I... haven't changed at all...
Yukina: ...
Yukina: If that's how things are, you could always wait until the next one.
Rinko: N-no... I don't want to do that...
Yukina: Why not? You could end up going through the same experience as last time.
Rinko: M-maybe... But I don't want to keep running...
Rinko: If I turn back now, then I really will have accomplished nothing...
Yukina: ...
Yukina: You claim you haven't changed at all, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
Rinko: Huh...?
Yukina: You've decided to stand your ground. That alone is proof of your growth.
Rinko: D-do you really think so...?
Yukina: Absolutely. It's indicative of bravery.
Rinko: ...
Rinko: Uhm, Yukina-san... May I please ask you... one question...?
Yukina: Of course. I don't mind.
Rinko: Don't you ever feel the pressure of... standing up on stage... in front of everyone...?
Rinko: Like the pressure to put on a good performance...? Or to keep the crowd from being disappointed...?
Rinko: I think there are a lot of things to worry about... under the spotlight...
Yukina: No, I have never felt anything of the sort.
Yukina: Though I do not neglect the feelings of the audience... meeting someone's expectations is not the reason why I choose to perform.
Yukina: I take the stage to perform my music... to perform Roselia's music.
Yukina: With only that idea occupying my thoughts, there's no room for anything else.
Rinko: ...!
Rinko: ("Perfect form, perfect shot"... It's so similar to what Hikawa-san taught me...)
Rinko: (It all makes sense now... Yukina-san is the type of person who... can naturally live by that mindset...)
Rinko: (Which is why she is fearless... and can be herself on stage...)
Yukina: Rinko, allow me to ask a question of my own.
Rinko: Huh? O-okay...
Yukina: Why do you play the piano?
Rinko: The reason... why...
Rinko: ...
Rinko: F-forgive me... I cannot answer that right now...
Yukina: An immediate reply isn't necessary. However, I recommend that you try getting in touch with your feelings.
Yukina: If you do that, you should be able to find the answer you're searching for.
Rinko: Yukina-san...

Rinko: (The reason why I play the piano... What could it be...?)
Rinko: (I've... never given it any thought...)
Rinko: (Releasing an album... Becoming famous... Goals like that have never crossed my mind...)
Ako: Rin-rin~! Hey!
Rinko: A-Ako-chan...?
Rinko: You know... band practice... doesn't start for a while, right...?
Ako: I figured I'd stop by early to cheer you on! Lisa-nee and Sayo-san are here, too!
Lisa: Is everything alright, Rinko? You were pretty spaced out there for a second...
Sayo: You left the door to the studio open. Please be more careful.
Rinko: Oh no, y-you're right... Forgive me... It won't happen again...
Ako: So, from the looks of it, I'm guessing the competition practice isn't going so hot...?
Rinko: No, it isn't... I'm sorry... It's like... you're all supporting me... for nothing...
Ako: No way! It's not like I'm doing this because you asked me to! Don't worry about it!
Lisa: Yeah, she's right. And everyone has their off days.
Sayo: And those are the days when it's best to back away from the grindstones. Why not try something to clear your mind?
Rinko: Clear my mind...?
Ako: ... Ah! I know what we can do! We should play together for a bit!
Rinko: Together?
Ako: Yep! It'll be a perfect way to get your mind off of things!
Ako: Forget about trying to play perfectly and just cut loose!
Rinko: Ako-chan...
Sayo: That may actually be a decent change of pace.
Lisa: Yeah, great idea! I say we give it a shot!
Ako: Any ideas on what we should play? What do you wannna do, Rin-rin?
Rinko: Me? Uh, I think... Opera of the Wasteland might be good...?
Ako: Now we're talkin'! Great choice!
Sayo: Sounds like we're in agreement. Is everyone ready?
Rinko: Y-Yes...!

Rinko: ...
Ako: (Her notes still seem kinda sad... C'mon Rin-rin! Listen to how we're playing!)
Rinko: (...! Ako-chan...?)
Lisa: (That's not going to cut it~! You won't start to feel better with such a gloomy melody~☆)
Sayo: (A melancholic sound is not what we're aiming for. You should know that better than anyone, Shirokane-san.)
Rinko: (Imai-san... Hikawa-san... Their feelings are perfectly etched into their sound...)
Rinko: (My playing is being drawn in by theirs... Our sounds are harmonizing... They're all going along with the piano...)
Rinko: (This sensation... Yes, this is exactly what I felt when I joined Roselia... and when I synchronized my playing with theirs...)
Rinko: (It's the feeling... of joy...!)
Rinko: (But I can't shake the feeling that... that wasn't the first time...)
Ako & Lisa: ...!
Ako: (No way! Rin-rin added her own arrangement!)
Lisa: (M-Maybe she got a bit too excited~? Fufu, but you're certainly enjoying yourself, Rinko.)

Ako: Ohh~! That was hyper-ultra-mega amazing~!!
Lisa: Hahaha, I didn't expect things to go the way they did.
Ako: Truly, the dark forces dwelling within these drums... Uhhh, upon this realm will they... uhm...
Rinko: Wreak havoc?
Ako: Yeah, that! It was a performance that could wreack havoc upon the world!
Ako: Hey, hey! Did you come up with that arrangement on the fly? It was super cool!
Rinko: I-I did... The way you all were playing... inspired me... to want to try something different...
Rinko: I thought... it would be appropriate for the moment...
Lisa: I-I can't believe you improvised something so incredible... You're amazing, Rinko...
Sayo: Well said. Though it did result in a completely different song.
Rinko: I-I'm so sorry... Hikawa-san... I know you keep telling me... to follow the sheet music...
Sayo: ... I certainly did not intend that as criticism.
Sayo: The arrangement matched the mood, and it struck the balance necessary to keep from throwing off the melody. A brilliant performance, I must admit.
Rinko: Hikawa-san...
Lisa: The ever-strict, accuracy-obsessed Sayo is giving out compliments...!
Ako: Hmph~! No fair, Sayo-san~! You always tell me I have to follow the sheet music~!
Sayo: And her improv would have been justly rebuked had it ruined the song.
Rinko: ... Thank you so much... everyone... Being able to share this session with you... helped me remember something precious...
Lisa: What's that?
Rinko: Why I play the piano... How I came to like it... Those reasons have once again become perfectly clear...

Neighbor A: Hey, let's go play~!
Young Rinko: Uhm, I... I have to play piano...
Young Rinko: (Oops, I almost forgot... I should thank them for inviting me...)
Young Rinko: I, uh... You...
Neighbor A: ...? What? Can you speak up~?
Neighbor B: Hurry, hurry! Come quick! There's a big dog over here~!
Neighbor A: There is?! Bye, Rinko-chan!

Piano Classroom

Young Rinko: (I really wanted to thank them... so why couldn't I...?)
Piano Teacher: Alright, Rinko-chan. Try playing the usual piece. Rinko-chan? Hello, are you listening~?
Young Rinko: Y-yes... Here I go...
Young Rinko: (This is a fun song... but I'm not really in the mood to play...)
Piano Teacher: ... Hmmm. Sounded somewhat gloomy. Something's got you down?
Young Rinko: Huh? H-how did you...?
Piano Teacher: Hahaha, it's easy to tell. The poor piano was practically sobbing.
Young Rinko: But... I played like I always do...
Piano Teacher: Fufu, you would think so, huh? When it comes to a piano, the sound it makes reflects the musician's feelings. When you're sad, your piano is sad. When you're happy, it's happy.
Young Rinko: ...!
Piano Teacher: Go on, give it another try.
Young Rinko: Y-yes, ma'am...
Piano Teacher: Fufu, see? I think a sprinkle of happiness was mixed in there.
Young Rinko: (...! My emotions... are being sent... through the music...)
Young Rinko: (Even though I'm not good at speaking to others, I'm still able to convey my feelings...)

Ako: I didn't know about that...
Rinko: As a child... I was even worse at speaking to others... than I am now... I could barely communicate with my peers.
Rinko: That's when my instructor stepped in... and taught me that... feelings can be conveyed through the piano...
Rinko: I was so happy... and had so much fun...
Sayo: And that is what made you so enamored with the piano.
Rinko: Yes... because it allows me... to express my emotions...
Rinko: But somewhere along the way... I had forgotten that...
Yukina: Oh. So you've found your answer.
Lisa: ... Yukina?!
Sayo & Ako: ...!
Rinko: H-how long have you been there...?
Yukina: Since the beginning of your session, I suppose. You were all so wrapped up in playing that you must not have noticed.
Sayo: Y-You could have at least said something.
Ako: Sh-she's right! Hmph, you really scared me~!
Yukina: I wouldn't dare interrupt a performance. I do understand basic etiquette.
Rinko: Uhm, Yukina-san... Thank you very much...
Rinko: Without your advice... I wouldn't have realized... what is truly precious to me...
Yukina: I didn't do anything. The one who found that answer is you, Rinko.
Yukina: So, do you feel capable of confronting that piece now?
Rinko: I do... Reaching that final note... shouldn't be a problem now...
Lisa: Huh? What's going on? Care to fill me in?
Rinko: Well, Yukina-san... was nice enough... to listen to my troubles...
Yukina: Think nothing of it.
Ako: Yukina-san! Now that you're here, would you like to join our jam session?
Yukina: I'm sorry?
Lisa: Letting loose and playing off of each other every now and then can be fun too.
Rinko: I... would also like for you to join us, Yukina-san...
Sayo: Going against one's typical nature can sometimes bring about inspiration, in my opinion.
Yukina: Even you agree, Sayo...? Fine. But only one song.

Day of the Piano Competition

Venue for Qualifying Rounds

Yukina: The competition is being held here...?!
Lisa: This is a massive hall for them to be doing preliminaries!
Sayo: Shirokane-san did mention that it's quite famous. Surely they're pouring a lot of time and effort into it.
Yukina: Either way, this is an astounding number of people.
Lisa: I heard it would be crowded, but I never imagined it'd be like this. Rinko may have said that she can give a performance she'd be satisfied with, but will she really be alright...?
Sayo: I wonder the same. Hopefully she can properly focus on playing...
Yukina: And what exactly will worrying accomplish?
Lisa: Still~...
Yukina: She faced her struggles with the piano head-on and came up with her answer. And when you hold a belief you're sure of, it empowers you.
Yukina: The best we can do for her now is to have faith.
Lisa: Yukina...
Sayo: Minato-san is correct. All we need to do now is trust in Shirokane-san...
Lisa: Yeah, you're right... You can do it, Rinko...!

Waiting Room

Rinko: ...
Ako: You okay, Rin-rin?
Rinko: Y-yeah. I'm alright... Really...
Ako: (Can't blame her. She's about to perform in front of a huge crowd...)
Ako: (No, this is where I come in! I've got to do what I can to help Rin-rin relax!)
Ako: Y-you'll be fine! I took a peek at the audience, and there weren't even that many people~... Wait!
Ako: Ako, you dummy! That'll never work! She'll realize how jam-packed it is once she steps out there!
Rinko: A-Ako-chan...?
Ako: Ngh~! I'm sorry, Rin-rin, but there are like a million people in the audience today~!
Rinko: Wh-what?!
Ako: ... Ako, you doofus! Why'd you blurt that out?!
Ako: You shouldn't say stuff that'll make her even more nervous!
Ako: Uhhh, I... ah, I know! Just picture the audience as vegetables!
Ako: That's what my sister said to do when you're nervous!
Ako: Peppers, cabbages... celery would be a good choice, too... Ah!
Ako: Wait, Rin-rin hates celery! Arcgh, why did I have to say celery!? Ako, you mega moron!
Rinko: Uhh... Ako-chan...? Try to calm down...
Ako: Sorry, Rin-rin...! All I wanted was to try and help you relax a bit!
Ako: Now even I have no idea what I'm saying...!
Ako: Ohhh, it's so hard to say something that doesn't create more stress~!
Rinko: Thank you, Ako-chan...
Rinko: I can tell... how concerned you are about me...
Ako: But aren't you still nervous...?
Rinko: Yes... I'm anxious about performing... but that's okay...
Rinko: Something like this... that terrifies me... to the point of wanting to run away... That's exactly the type of thing... I want to overcome...
Ako: Rin-rin...
Staff: Rinko Shirokane-san. Please begin to make your way to the stage.
Ako: Ah! Your turn is coming up, Rin-rin! Go knock their socks off!
Rinko: Okay... I'll show just what I can do...

Announcer: ... And now, a performance by Rinko Shirokane-san.
Rinko: ...!
Rinko: (Ako-chan was right about how crowded it is...)
Rinko: (D-don't think about it... Calm down... Focus...)
Rinko: (Don't worry. You've rehearsed this over and over again...)
Yukina: ...
Rinko: (...! Yukina-san is sitting right over there...)
Lisa & Sayo: ...
Rinko: (And there are Imai-san and Hikawa-san...)
Rinko: ...!
Rinko: (Today... my focus is my piano...)
Rinko: (But when I play it... I want to show everyone... how much fun I have when I'm performing...!)
Ako: (Rin-rin is playing out of her mind...!)
Sayo: (What a solid performance... No, there's something more...)
Yukina: (A sound filled with emotion, each note brilliantly illuminated.)
Lisa: (The size of the audience isn't fazing her one bit...! Way to go, Rinko...!)
Rinko: (My surroundings... are slowly fading...)
Rinko: (Exactly like they did... when Hikawa-san was teaching me archery...)
Rinko: (Everything disappears... Only the piano and I exist... Nothing could be more exhilarating...)

Ako: Congrats~, Rin-rin!!
Rinko: Th-thank you, Ako-chan...
Lisa: Those results would've schocked anyone. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard they were giving you that gold plaque.
Sayo: I believe that was the prize for first place in the competition.
Rinko: I-It was a stroke luck... that I had a good showing... A fluke... That's all...
Yukina: No need to be so modest. You should hold your head high.
Yukina: Talentless individuals could never hope of having a stellar performance like that fall into their laps.
Lisa: Hahaha, she's right about that.
Lisa: Putting on a show like tha tis amazing, and in front of such a big crowd too.
Ako: Rin-rin, you've managed to conquer your fears!
Rinko: Does it seem that way...? I peresonally don't believe so...
Sayo: Do you mean it doesn't feel that way to you?
Rinko: Y-yes. What I do know is that I had fun with my performance...
Rinko: But I was also a nervous wreck... terrified during my entire time up on stage...
Rinko: That's why... I don't feel as though I've conquered anything...
Yukina: That's imply how it goes.
Rinko: Yukina-san...
Yukina: Despite the stress and the fear... you enjoyed your time under the spotlight, didn't you?
Rinko: Y-yes...!
Yukina: Overcoming an obstacle doesn't only mean ridding yourself of fear.
Yukina: Finding the strength to confront that fear and defiantly press forward... I believe that is another way to overcome something.
Yukina: That is precisely what you have done.
Rinko: Thank you very much...
Rinko: Hearing that from you... may be just enough... for me to find a little bit of self-confidence...
Ako: Nah, you definitely deserve to have way more than a little~! It should be enough to go "Boom!"
Sayo: Shirokane-san should be allowed to move at her own pace.
Lisa: Fufu, but Rinko sure was cool up on that stage by herself~!
Lisa: From here on, why not try getting up in front of people more often?
Rinko: N-no, thank you... I accepted this challenge... so I could attempt to overcome my fears...
Rinko: But I don't feel like... making this a regular thing... I'm sorry...
Lisa: Hahaha, can't say I blame you.
Yukina: Oh my, not willing to try?
Rinko: Yukina-san...?
Yukina: Rinko, you wish to change, correct?
Yukina: If so, then don't set your own limits. Challenge yourself to do things that you don't believe are in your power.
Yukina: If you do that, you're sure to discover a new and improved you.
Rinko: Yes... you're right...
Rinko: I will continue to pursue new challenges... until the day when I can hold my head high...
